South Sudan
Lion’s Strength South Sudan is a forthcoming initiative planned with a vision to spark transformative community development in key areas of the country. A central candidate for this project is Tambura, a unique and strategic region in South Sudan.
About Tambura
Tambura is located in southwestern South Sudan – bordering the Central African Republic to the west and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the south. Historically, it was part of the Azande Kingdom and marked one of the earliest points of Christian missionary influence in the country.
While Tambura has remained relatively insulated from the ongoing civil war, the region faces severe infrastructural challenges. The area is characterized by dense rainforest, abundant mahogany, and other exotic trees, with highly fertile soil.
Although food insecurity is less severe here than in many other regions, Tambura struggles with a near-complete lack of education facilities and limited job opportunities. These realities fuel frustration among local youth, heightening the risk of their involvement in armed conflict.
Project Vision and Rationale:
Given its unique conditions and relative stability, Tambura is a promising candidate for Lions Strength’s Value Villages model. The goal is to introduce sustainable education and livelihood programs that leverage the region’s fertile land and dedicated local communities.
By prioritizing educational access, economic opportunity, and capacity building, the initiative aims to channel youth energy into constructive, community-driven development rather than conflict.
Partnerships and Local Support
The groundwork for Lion’s Strength South Sudan in Tambura is strengthened by a partnership with the local Catholic Diocese – our reliable partner organization on the ground. We also have the full endorsement of the newly established county government.
Ten initial locations have been selected based on accessibility from the Catholic Mission of Nboko, which will serve as the base of operations.
Next Steps
The first stage will involve a comprehensive needs assessment in Tambura, engaging local stakeholders and partners to design tailored pilot programs.
Education, youth engagement, sustainable agriculture, and job creation are anticipated as early areas of focus.
The long-term vision is to position Tambura as a model for inclusive, resilient, and community-led development in South Sudan.
